Artificial Intelligence

Current research in the Artificial Intelligence group of the CSE department is focused on a variety of approaches to machine learning, as well as work on cognitive modeling. We also have a great deal of work on Computer Vision and Graphics, which has been split off into the Computer Vision Laboratory and the Computer Graphics Laboratory/

However, our department, and UCSD, is highly interdisciplinary. In particular, check out the NSF-sponsored program in Vision and Learning in Humans and Machines. Computer Science and Engineering is also a participating department in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science, and the Director of the Program is Gary Cottrell.

Learning

Learning is a central theme of most work in the Artificial Intelligence group. We have strong interests in unsupervised, supervised, and reinforcement learning. Faculty in this area include (in alphabetical order!): Gary Cottrell, Sanjoy Dasgupta, Charles Elkan, and Yoav Freund.

Cognitive Modeling

Work in this area is focused on NI, Natural Intelligence, more than Aritificial Intelligence. The work here centers on understanding how the brain makes the mind, through constructing working models of cognitive tasks that are neurologically plausible. Gary Cottrell is the faculty member in this area.
