CSE Professor Joseph Pasquale has been named one of UCSD's Distinguished Teachers for 2003. This award, presented annually by the UCSD Academic Senate, recognizes faculty who have shown creativity and extra effort in improving classes and teaching effectiveness. This year's other recipient's are Academic Senate members David Luft (History), Valerie Hartouni (Communications), Andrew Kummel (Chemistry/Biochemistry) and Noel Weidner (Pathology), non-senate instructional faculty Stephen Lincoln (Sociology) and graduate student Jose de Pierola.
Professor Pasquale's citation from the Academic Senate reads as follows:
Joseph Pasquale's dynamic style and ingenious methods have earned him the ardent admiration of his students and peers. His curriculum innovations are among the core strengths of the Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs. His honors include an NCR Faculty Innovation Award and two Jacobs School of Engineering "Best Teacher" awards. He has won a major Hewlett-Packard grant to establish a landmark undergraduate operating systems laboratory, and his inspired idea to create a seminar on the slide rule for freshman students won praise in the Wall Street Journal. Says one former student, "I hope UCSD students for many years to come will have the honor of learning as much from Professor Pasquale as I did."
In recognition of distinguished teaching at the University of California, San Diego, the Academic Senate bestows this award.
