Michael Dell, founder and chief executive officer of Dell Computer Corp., participated in a dialogue with Robert Sullivan, founding dean of the UCSD Management School; Freider Seible, dean of the UCSD School of Engineering, and Ray Smilor, president of the Beyster Institute, a non-profit education, training and consulting organization dedicated to advancing the use of entrepreneurial employee ownership.

In brief remarks and then in conversation with UCSD Chancellor Dynes,
Bill Gates, founder and chief software architect for Microsoft, described how, by the end of this decade - a time he calls
the Digital Decade - PC's and computing technology will be indispensable parts of our lives. In this era, computing technology will become so inexpensive, powerful and commonplace that it will be woven into the fabric of our society such that we often won't even notice it. Gates also described the ongoing role of research as it drives innovation
in academia and industry.
