Connecting to Departmental Printers from User-Supported Machines
If your machine is not maintained by csehelp, then you are responsible for setting up printing on your machine in order to connect to the departmental printers. The connection mechanism is different based on the operating system that you use.

General-access Printers
The current list of general access printers in the CSE department can be found here

Printing from RedHat Enterprise Linux or Fedora Core
CSE Linux-based operating systems use the CUPS printing mechanism.

We recommend using the system-config-printer command to configure General-access Printers. Please use the following procedures:

Choose a printer from here. The printer you select will be referred to as [printer] below.

As root, run /usr/sbin/system-config-printer.

Click New, and progress through the screens.

Set the following paramters:

  • Name: [printer]
  • Queue type: Networked CUPS (IPP)
  • Server: cseprint.ucsd.edu
  • Path: /printers/[printer]
  • Model: Generic Postscript Printer

Print a test page.

If the test page comes out, but appears clipped, its possible the printer paper is assumed to be A4 size. In that event, 'Edit' the printer entry, select the 'Driver options' tab, and make sure 'Paper Size' is set to 'US Letter'. You may need to click the 'Apply' button on the main window.

Please note, neither cseprint nor the printers themselves will respond to print requests from outside the ucsd.edu domain.

Printing from Windows
Please see our Printing from Windows document off our Windows section. For a list of printers, see "General-access Printers" above.

Printing from a Macintosh
Under MacOS X, we recommend using direct IP printing to our printers in lieu of AppleTalk.

Bring up the System Preferences - Print & Fax dialog. Click the plus button under the printer list. Select "HP Jet Direct - Socket" for protocol, and put the hostname of the printer in the address field (e.g. p3107-b1). Leave the queue field empty. It should automatically detect the correct printer driver to use. Click Add, and you're done.

You may need to adjust the proper "Installable Options" under the printer setup dialog (e.g. Duplex Unit for double-sided printing).

For a list of printers, see "General-access Printers" above.
