Connecting User-Supported Windows Computers to CSE Printers.

Printing Considerations:

  • Printing is allowed from any computer within the department
  • Direct TCP connection is used to connect to the printers
  • Ordinary 'users' cannot add printers on csehelp supported machines
  • Install definitions for printers to which you have physical access.

Printing from Windows

As the Windows client spools the printjob for direct (TCP) printer connections, print jobs information from other computers is not available in printer status windows.

A typical Windows 2000 printer install scenario consists of the following steps:

  • Download (and extract if necessary) the latest drivers from HP's website http://www.hp.com/cposupport/
  • Start/Settings/Add Printer
  • Select 'Local Printer' (Don't Auto Detect)
  • Create Port; Scroll down to 'Standard TCP Port'; Next;
  • Enter IP address of target printer. (perform a host lookup via an SSH window - e.g. host 5426-b1);
  • Next; Finish; Wait for 'Add Printer Wizard' window appears with printer selection panes.
  • Select HP and choose printer model. If model doesn't exist you must download from net (per above); Next
  • Enter a printer name - e.g. 5426-b1
  • Click 'Next'; Don't 'share' the printer; Click 'Next'; Print a test page if desired;
  • Right-click the new printer object (in the 'Printers' window). Select printer 'Properties'; Select 'Device Settings';
  • If the printer is equipped with a duplex option (as are most CSE printers) change 'Total Printer Memory' to an arbitrary number greater than 18 megabytes, and change 'Installable Options'/'Duplex Unit' to 'Installed'.

A typical Windows XP printer install scenario consists of the following steps:

  • Select 'Local Printer' (Don't Auto Detect)
  • Create a new Port; Scroll down to 'Standard TCP Port'; Next;
  • Enter IP address of target printer. (perform a host lookup via an SSH window - e.g. host 5426-b1);
  • Next; Finish; Wait for 'Add Printer Wizard' window appears with printer selection panes.
