Computer graphics
Professor Zwicker's research interests focuses on methods to deal with complex data in computer graphics
applications. He has contributed extensively to point-based methods, which facilitate the manipulation and
visualization of highly detailed, irregularly sampled surfaces. His collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric Research
Laboratories in Cambridge, MA, has led to several patents on point-based methods. He has been a driving force in
establishing the Eurographics Symposium on Point-Based Graphics as a prim forum in this emerging area. In addition,
Zwicker has focused intensely on signal processing issues for high quality image synthesis. He has contributed
algorithms to prevent aliasing artifacts in point-based rendering, volume data visualization, and automultiscopic 3D
displays.
Capsule Bio:
Matthias Zwicker joined the UCSD faculty in February 2006. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the
Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2006. He was also awarded an ETH medal for outstanding
dissertations. In 2003-2005, Zwicker was a post-doctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His
research interests are in computer graphics, focusing on point-based methods, signal processing for image synthesis, 3D
geometry processing, and data-driven methods. Zwicker has served as a reviewer and program committee member for various
international journals and conferences. He was a co-organizer of the Eurographics Symposium on Point-Based Graphics 2004,
papers co-chair in 2005, and conference co-chair in 2006. He holds several patents.
