What it is

Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of photocopy machines around campus that you can only use if you have an authorized budget number?

Have you ever wondered how you can get a budget number?

The CSE Debit Union is a group of CSE graduate students that have pooled a sufficient deposit (and record of paying our bills) to convince the CSE department to give us a budget number.

The Debit Union offers a copy account to its members:

  • A Copy Account requires a $10 deposit, and allows you to make copies on the machine in the grad lounge, or any of the machines in the Muir copy center on the 3rd floor of AP&M. You will be charged a slight (%3) markup on any copies, and expected to pay any significant negative balance (not including the $10 deposit) promptly.

How much?
Pretty cheap, really.

  • Copies currently run just about 5 cents apiece: Not the cheapest bulk rate within 10 miles, but a cheap rate for single sheets---and you can't beat the convenience.
  • Other copy services are available on campus that you can charge to your account, but be careful. Some services are expensive.
  • For a low cost per copy, you can give your machine feedable originals to the operator in the 3rd floor Muir Copy Center. Fill out their copy request form, include the budget number, and have the billing copy go to the Fiscal Manager, CSE dept. (Mail code 0404)
  • Other services are available at the Copy Center; just ask the operator. Careful, though. Some services are extremely overpriced. For instance, having a job stapled costs something like $2.00. A good deal for 1000 sets, but a really bad deal for a single 20 page paper!

What else?
Roughly every month, I'll send out a balance statement to all members. If you've got a significant negative balance in your Copy Account, either:

  1. Email me: (vivek at cs) for payment details. OR
  2. Leave a check (made out to Vivek Manpuria) in my mailbox in the mailroom off of the Grad Lounge.
I write a personal check to pay the university each month, I don't make any profit off of this, and I don't want/need any hassles.

How to join
Print out and sign the Copy Account Contract and bring it to Vivek Manpuria with the $10.00 deposit (the mailbox will work with a check).
