The CSE Department is seeking qualified undergraduates to work as Readers or Tutors for CSE courses. For a list of courses being offered each quarter, please refer to the undergraduate course schedule.

Position Descriptions

Reader
A Reader assists a course instructor by grading homework, papers, or exams and may also hold office hours to answer students questions about such assignments. The pay rate is $11.90/hour.

Tutor
A tutor assists the faculty member by providing instruction to individual students or small groups of students who require additional help. A tutor, as needed, is expected to facilitate discussion sections, hold office hours and be accessible to students. The pay rate is $14.27/hour.

Undergraduate Tutor (serving as a Teaching/Instructional Apprentice)
A tutor (serving as a teaching/instructional apprentice) serves as an assistant in an undergraduate course under the supervision of a faculty member. The faculty instructor is responsible for the course content and for maintaining the overall quality of instruction, including supervision of the undergraduate instructional apprentice. The purpose of the apprenticeship is to learn the methodology of teaching through actual practice in a regularly scheduled course. The pay rate is $14.27/hour.

In order to be considered for a position you must:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum of 90 units completed
  • Be a registered UCSD undergraduate student with fees paid.
  • Enroll in CSE 195 (Tutor Training) during the quarter you are hired for if you have not already completed it. We will provide add cards for students who need to enroll in this class.

Please note: Actual appointment to Reader or Tutor position is determined by individual instructors. A student may not assist in a course in which s/he is enrolled nor may a student be a teaching/instructional apprentice in more than one course in a quarter.

Applications are due at the end of 8th week in Fall, Winter and Spring quarters for positions beginning the next quarter. Please submit your application online. If you have any questions please email Viera Kair at vkair@cs.ucsd.edu.
