Undergraduate Course Descriptions

CSE126 - Multimedia Systems

Units: 4

Course Objectives:
Last taught Summer 2003. Technological advances in hardware are revolutionizing computers so as to support digital multimedia, and in particular, continuous video and audio, leading to new design spaces in computer systems and applications. This course will serve to introduce all aspects of multimedia computing, communication, storage, and applications to future engineers, practitioners, and researchers. There is now enough depth in multimedia that it deserves a special course, particularly given its wide-ranging applications, spanning from education to entertainment.

Course Description:
Multimedia technologies; multimedia storage models and structures; data models and interfaces; multimedia information systems; video/audio networking; media synchronization; image computing and information assimilation; conferencing paradigms and structured interaction support.

Format:
3 hours of lecture per week, 1 hour discussion section per week, 4 hours of computer lab, and 4 hours of outside preparation.

Prerequisites:
CSE 120 or consent of the instructor.

Other restrictions:
Majors only.

Laboratory work:
Programming assignments on network of computer workstations at the CSE department undergraduate advanced programming environment lab.

Offered:
One quarter per year.
