I would like to appeal a decision made by the Computer Science and Engineering Department. Is there an appeals process?
To appeal a decision made by the CSE Department, submit your request to Patricia Raczka at raczka@cs.ucsd.edu. The appeals process can take 3-4 business weeks. Include your name, pid #, and phone number.

I was not directly admitted to a computer science or computer engineering major. Is there a way that I can get into the major later on?
We have directly admitted as many students as our resources permit, taking into account expected attrition rates. As a result, admission to a CSE major after arriving at UCSD is very unlikely. If you have not been directly admitted to a Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) major, or to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) computer engineering major, and you would not be happy with another UCSD major course of study, you may be best advised to choose another university. We regret that we cannot give you any promises of future admission into these majors. Also, see last question on Exceptional Admission Program.
- I was denied admission to the computer science major in the CSE Department, but I have been told the ECE Department also offers the computer engineering major. If I change to the ECE Department now, can I be admitted into the computer engineering major?
No. The computer engineering major is a joint program between the ECE Department and the CSE Department. Because the computer engineering major is impacted, the same admission restrictions are applied across both departments. Also, because the ECE Department is now impacted you will not be able to switch.

I was denied admission to computer science and computer engineering, but I am interested in other aspects of engineering. Can I become a major in another Jacobs School of Engineering department?
Every department in Jacobs School is excellent, and the other Jacobs School majors (except for ECE's computer engineering and electrical engineering major, and the Bioengineering major) may be open to you. Contact the academic advisors of the other departments for details.
-
If I become a major in another engineering department, can I minor in CSE?
No. If you are a major in any department of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD, you may not take a minor in the CSE Department.
-
Although I am not a computer science or computer engineering major, can I enroll in classes offered by the CSE Department?
These courses are highly impacted and first priority is given to CSE students. We try to accommodate students from other Jacobs School departments as much as possible, but enrollment is resources-available basis.
-
I was admitted as a major in computer engineering in the CSE Department. Can I change to computer science?
Yes.
-
If I have been denied admission to computer science or computer engineering, can I become a math/computer science major?
This may be possible; interested students should contact a Mathematics Department advisor for details.
-
What is the difference between computer science and math/computer science?
The two majors differ in their emphasis and in their lists of required courses. The math/computer science major has many fewer required computer science and engineering courses and more required mathematics courses. Again, you should contact a Mathematics Department advisor for details.
-
If I enroll into the math/computer science major can I change later on into a computer science or computer engineering major?
The CSE Department is severely impacted. We have admitted as many students as our resources permit. As a result, admission to a CSE major after arriving at UCSD is very unlikely. Also, see next question on Exceptional Admission Program.
-
What is the CSE Exceptional Admissions Program and can I apply for admission through this program?
Yes, any UCSD student who has completed (a) a minimum of 3 quarters of study at UCSD (b) with an overall GPA of at least a 3.5 and (c) two CSE, ECE, Math or Science Courses, such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or other Engineering, may apply for admission into the CSE Department through the CSE Exceptional Admission Program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission.
